English Rose Boutique: My First Blog!

It's been a year since I started my own business. A year since I walked away from a highly stressful job as a headteacher. A year since I became happy!

I set up English Rose Boutique in May 2019. A business that sells preloved clothing and vintage fashion.

Fed up with juggling budgets, staffing, children and those oh so tricky parents I decided enough was enough. The holidays were great but I was ill for most of them - my body deciding to rebel every time school ended! So I walked away from a 22 yr long career in education to set up my own business.

In the early days I fancied myself as a crafter. My new glue gun was my best friend and I set about making things. Fairy wands and fairy doors, trinket boxes, decorative picture frames. I had a lovely time. However, in reality relaxing as it was, making things in the sunshine, they weren't really money making items. Good therapy but not good earners.

As money was tighter than usual I started to frequent local charity shops. I have always been a fan of buying clothes but these days I had a wardrobe full of office-wear I didn't need and a shortage of comfortable stay at home clothing. I started to buy bargains for myself, and started to use Facebook Marketplace to sell my unwanted clothes. The buzz I got from finding a bargain or making a clothing sale was tremendous. It soon became clear that this was a good way to make money. Buy from charity shops and sell on at a profit.

English Rose Boutique would make more money focusing on clothing than any number of craft items, so this is how my little business began.
